Wow!
It has been almost two weeks that we have been in Stung
Treng, Cambodia!!!
It feels great to be here and have met some super people
already. Admittedly, we are still finding our place with the Asian Outreach Stung
Treng (AO ST) team here but we are really happy to be here. We have been
driving on the Moto lots, and I love just hanging on the back, taking photos as
we go. Must do this more as already I am taking scenes for granted.
Stung Treng is a rural but growing town. It is the wet
season but the temperature so far is up to 35degrees Celsius with humidity
around 60% most days. Until it rains, that humidity just keeps rising, then a
thunder and lighting storm to die for comes a long, bringing with it rain that
scares Buddie inside and under the couch.
Buddie is a dog we are looking after. There are also the two
small cats, Skippy and Smoky, its all quite homely where we are house sitting.
No air conditioning, which is helping us get used to the heat quickly. Cold
showers are so, so good here!!
Levi is keeping really busy at the AO model farm with
general farm maintenance, as well as some construction tasks and has a lot more
lined up for the Training Centre, which still has some work to be completed by
an independent construction company before it is handed over to our
construction team.
I on the other hand, feel like the first week has been me wandering
around wiping my forehead as sweat drips into my sunnies. Yes, I have helped
out there and here, I tagged along with a village outing once or twice, and I
over organised the vaccines for the piglets that will come soon. Some days I
have felt really disheartened because I don’t know what I should do with every
minute of my day and all I want to be is useful. I try learning another word or
saying in Khmer every day, normally it doesn’t stick till the sixed time. I
have had a great many times when I wish I had learnt Khmer while in Canada.
This way at least I could wander around distracting the staff by chatting to
them. Well let us be honest I do this anyway with my very, very limited Khmer
mixed with English and hand gestures.
After 11days here though my mind is starting to relax, I am
also praying a lot that I see the opportunities where I can help. God obviously has us here for this season for
reasons, which may or may not be fully visual or practical like I may want it
to be. I shall learn soon enough!
Mostly though, when it comes down to it, I am just so happy
to be living in the town, hanging out in the same spot and with similar people
to what my Dad did. Yay Dad moments, for I have had a few already.
Do you want to get a better idea about where we are and whom
we are volunteering with???

Great pics and a great story!! Its so amazing what both of you are doing. This thought always crosses my mind. id love to be able to do this one day!! Pack my bags and go away to do something that really makes a difference. I just need to find the courage in me to do so. I am although glad that there are people such as yourself who have made it a reality. Keep up the good work :) Hi to Levi!
ReplyDeleteVisha!
Visha you are truly an encouragement and joy!!! Thank you for your words sometime I do not think I am the one making the difference but I will keep trying. I really hope one day you can get away as you say, but remember you are most likely making a difference in peoples lives just where you are as well!! Bless you, Kirsty oxo
DeleteLove what you are doing and why. I love how you are living your lives in general and your hearts for justice and opportunity specifically.
